Tattoo Removal, Sun Exposure and SPF

April 21, 2025

Avoiding sun exposure is paramount to an effective tattoo removal journey. Having a tan before, during or after your laser treatment can interfere with the healing process, increases the risk of hypopigmentation and can potentially hinder the laser effectiveness. Keeping your tattoo covered when exposed to the sun is essential and the area will not be treated if tan is present, this includes fake tan.

You can apply SPF 50 to the area or even better keep it completely covered, this will help to ensure you have a better healing journey, avoiding pigmentation damage and overall keeping your skin healthy!

SPF is so important to use all year round and it is generally not enough just using a daily moisturiser with SPF as this doesn’t give enough coverage. SPF or sun protection factor measures how well our skin is protected from UVB rays (the kind of radiation that causes sunburn and contributes to skin cancer.) The reason SPF in moisturiser is not enough comes down to the uneven or insufficient application, its not a long lasting sun protection and or not applied frequently enough.

Applying a separate SPF 50 will give you adequate protection, they are better formulated to be more resilient against water, sweat and natural oils and complete SPF will have a better formulation to protect against UVB and UVA rays.
